May 18, 2009 Regular Meeting

The City Council met in regular session on May 18, 2009 at 7:30 P.M. in the Council Chambers of City Hall.

City employees present were Chief Sedam, Public Works Director Gortsema, Attorney Green and Clerk Kennedy.

The meeting was called to order and the minutes of the May 4th regular meeting were approved as presented by Councilman Lester, second by Councilman Peterson.  Motion carried by a unanimous vote of the Council present.

VISITORS:  Gary McEwen was present to ask for the City’s support of the triathlon for August 14th (youth) and 15th (adults) at the City Pool.  In the past the pool fee was waived and the lifeguards’ wages for those on duty were donated by the City. They plan to have the proceeds go back into the school system; possibly the football field lights.  On motion by Councilman Lester, second by Councilman Houger to approve the triathlon for August 14th and 15th, the City to waive the pool rental fee and to provide the two lifeguards.  Motion carried by a unanimous vote of the Council present.

Elk Horn Lodge owner Louie De La Torre was present to ask for a sidewalk waiver as he is doing construction to make repairs after his fire and he needs to get up and running before he would be able to install sidewalks.  On motion by Councilman Houger, second by Councilman Peterson to give an indefinite sidewalk waiver to the Elk Horn Lodge at 822 W South 1st.  Motion carried by a unanimous vote of the Council present.

BILLS:  The bills in the amount of $290,697.80 were approved and ordered paid out of their respective funds, on motion by Councilman Lester, second by Councilman Lorentz.  Motion carried by a unanimous vote of the Council present.

YARD WASTE UPDATE:  Councilman Lester talked to Vern at Walco and the yard waste program has been operational two weeks now.  The have 40 more cans this year then last year.  Walco is running two trucks on Monday and picking up 11,000-12,000 pounds of yard waste per truck and those totals will be on tonnage reports when we receive them in August.

BEER AND WINE LICENSE:  On motion by Councilman Lorentz, second by Councilman Houger to approve the beer and wine application submitted by Bishop’s Bistro Inc. d/b/a Bishop’s Bistro pending state approval.  Motion carried by a unanimous vote of the Council present.

ITEMS TO NOTE:  The Council received copies of the Revenue and Expenditure Reports for the second quarter.
