October 22, 2018 Fire Training Minutes

Training meeting Monday October 22, 2018

Meeting called to order at 19:00

  • Before Bob dismissed firemen to the Waste Water Treatment Facility to work on air mask training he explained that if we the firemen ever get into a dangerous situation or feel like they are in a dangerous situation the code word is THUNDER. Whenever anyone yells “THUNDER” all firemen know that there is an extreme emergency that needs immediate attention.
  • Firemen were dismissed to the Waste Water Treatment Facility to practice SCBA training with full turnouts and air masks. Active shooter training; Bob designated teams and those teams of 3 entered facilities with hoses. When teams were about 30 feet into the facility there was gun fire. Bob gave the MAY DAY SIGNAL (3 blasts from the air horn) with an air horn and all firemen left the building.  First firemen out informed Bob that two in her team were down and unable to get out. Firemen were instructed to get away from the facility, disconnect hoses and move engine away. During evacuation Bob Called GPD. When GPD arrived they took over the shooting situation. Upon entering the facility the GPD found and located the wound and “dead” firemen and the shooter. GPD located the shooter and shot and “killed” him. As soon as shooter threat was removed firemen moved the engine back to the facility re-hooked hoses, and firemen with air masks retrieved the injured firemen. As soon as all firemen were in a safe place Bob reminded firemen that they were still in an active fire situation and that the fire needed to be extinguished.
  • Bob called the training over and ask everyone to put away hoses and air masks. When gear was put away all firemen gathered in the facility to debrief training. Only 5 firemen knew about the training before hand, so that active shooter training could be as realistic as possible. Bob explained the sad state of affairs that we need to practice this kind of situation, but it is a sign of the times. GPD Sergeant Mike discussed the training and what the GPD will do and what we can expect from the GPD once they get on the scene in active shooting situation.
  • Firemen returned to station and business meeting started at 20:35
  • Chiefs commented on how great a job everyone did on house fire on Harrison, there was also discussion on the barn fire on Turner Rd
  • John C and Kerry reported on fire safety lesson with the schools and IFG.
    • Eleven firemen donated 55 hours of time doing 13 presentations at 8 schools plus the mill. Over 360 kids were instructed about fire safety. This year the department also collaborated with the Forest Service at several schools.
  • Firemen were dismissed downstairs to refill air packs, put turnouts away, and to check all generators and chainsaws. Minutes taken by Kerry McCulley
